Tulare-Kings Summer Solar Energy Academy

Inspiring a New Generation of Solar Innovators and Ambassadors!

SunPower Corporation, in partnership with Tulare County Office of Education, Kings County Office of Education, West Hills Community College, Porterville, Lemoore, Lindsay, Dinuba, and Orosi High Schools is providing a 5-day solar energy summer experience for select incoming freshmen. The academy will provide students an in-depth working knowledge of residential photovoltaic system design and installation.

The Student Experience

This academy is a weeklong, intensive, work-based learning experience that includes lectures from solar professionals, hands-on activities and field visits. Lessons cover the anatomy of a residential solar project life cycle, as well as the district’s solar systems. In collaborative teams, students learn up-to-date solar professional information about the project scope, financial and environmental economics, design, permitting, installation and maintenance. Students and teachers will gain an understanding of solar career opportunities, professional development skills, and make deeper connections about the applicability of STEM disciplines.
The hands-on learning and experience by the students culminates into a high-quality team presentation with a real-life analysis of a residential solar project. In addition to the solar-focused content, students are trained to work in groups, problem solve collaboratively, delegate tasks, create a professional presentation and present it to a large public audience.
Presentations occur on the final academy day at the graduation where school community officials and parents are invited. By closing, students will be prepared to speak confidently about their projects and their district’s solar power system as solar community ambassadors.
